The fabled ‘Tommy Gun’!  In  1938 the the U.S. military officially adopted the Thompson submachine gun.  It served throughout the Second World War and beyond. It appeared in two versions in service, the M1928A1 and the M1/M1A1.

Over 1.5 million military Thompson submachine guns were produced during WW2.

In the ETO the Thompson was widely issued to British and Canadian commando units, the U.S. airborne forces and Ranger units. The U.S. Military Police often issued it to units responsible for POW compounds. Its high rate of fire suited the close street fighting that ensued during the invasion of Europe following D-Day assaults.
