The LEE-ENFIELD SMLE bolt-action, magazine-fed rifle was the mainstay of British and Commonwealth Servicemen in World War I and continued in service throughout World War II. The SMLE Mk III, was introduced on 26th January 1907. During WW1, the standard SMLE Mk III was found to be too complicated to manufacture ( …..costing £3.15.0!) and demand was outstripping supply, so in late 1915 the MkIII* was introduced.
Also used by many other nations as well as the French Resistance
